About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Mold Maker to join a modern, high-precision injection moulding manufacturing facility specializing in automotive and industrial components.

The facility utilizes Industry 4.0 technologies across design, tooling, automation, and production, with a strong focus on scientific injection moulding.

This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside experienced Mold Makers and Engineers on some of the most technically challenging, non-commodity injection molds in the market.

The successful candidate will work with complex tooling, including:

• Planetary rotational cores
• Internal mechanical movements
• Rotating gear rings
• Insert molding
• Mold-over parts
• Complex configurations and tight-tolerance components

The molds support highly complex automotive components and are manufactured to exceptional quality standards, with tolerances as tight as 0.0002″ (0.005 mm).

Position Summary

The Mold Maker is responsible for building new injection molds and repairing, modifying, and maintaining existing molds and tooling.

This role combines hands-on technical expertise, precision machining, mold assembly, troubleshooting, and craftsmanship to ensure molds operate correctly and consistently meet demanding quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Mold Assembly & Construction

• Assemble and adjust injection molds, including cavities, cores, slides, lifters, plates, guide pins, ejector systems, and cooling systems.
• Fit and hand-work mold components to achieve proper clearances and alignment.
• Drill and tap mounting holes, water-line connections, and ejector pin clearances.
• Blend parting lines and polish mold surfaces to required finish specifications.
• Bench-fit components using files, stones, scrapers, and precision hand tools.
• Read and interpret mold drawings, assembly prints, and technical specifications.
• Test completed molds to verify proper operation before release to production.

Machining & Fabrication

• Operate manual machining equipment, including:
  • Mills
  • Lathes
  • Surface grinders
  • Drill presses
• Perform precision grinding, drilling, tapping, and reaming.
• Machine custom components and repair parts as required.
• Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, and feeds for different materials.
• Perform machining calculations involving dimensions, angles, and offsets.
• Deburr and finish machined components to required quality standards.

Mold Repair & Modification

• Assess mold condition and determine appropriate repair strategies.
• Diagnose issues such as:
  • Flash
  • Short shots
  • Ejection problems
  • Cooling issues
• Repair damaged or worn components through welding, machining, or replacement.
• Coordinate welding and rework with appropriate departments or specialists.
• Modify existing molds to improve functionality, add features, or correct defects.
• Coordinate with the CNC department for component replacement or fabrication.
• Document repairs and modifications in the ERP system.

Quality & Precision Measurement

• Use precision measuring equipment, including:
  • Calipers
  • Micrometers
  • Height gauges
  • Indicators
  • Gauge pins
• Verify dimensions, clearances, and alignment throughout the assembly process.
• Consistently work to tight dimensional tolerances.
• Inspect mold function before releasing molds to the production floor.
• Document assembly times, completion status, and quality issues within the ERP system.

Welding & Surface Finishing

• Perform TIG welding on tool steels and other mold materials for repair and buildup.
• Properly prepare surfaces for welding, including cleaning and preheating.
• Grind and finish welded areas to restore original contours and surfaces.
• Polish mold surfaces using stones, abrasives, and polishing compounds to achieve required finish levels.

Basic Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Journeyman Mold Maker certification or 4+ years of equivalent mold-making experience.
• Strong knowledge of injection mold construction, assembly, and operation.
• Proficiency with manual machining equipment, including mills, lathes, and grinders.
• Proficiency with precision measuring instruments.
• Experience using precision hand tools and performing bench work.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to cleanliness and workplace organization.
• Proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams.
• Commitment to health and safety, continuous learning, and quality excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years of mold-making experience.
• Experience working with complex, high-cavitation molds.
• Experience with slides and lifters.
• Overhead crane and forklift experience, training, or certification.
• TIG welding certification or extensive experience welding tool steels.
• Polishing and texturing experience, particularly for cosmetic surfaces.
• Experience with hot runner systems and manifolds.
• Knowledge of EDM processes, including die-sinker and wire EDM.
• Experience with SolidWorks or other CAD software.
• ERP system experience for job tracking and documentation.
• Toolroom CNC experience.
• Experience with mold flow analysis.
• Knowledge of cooling system optimization.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for extended periods at workbenches and machinery.
• Ability to lift and maneuver components weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Strong manual dexterity for precision work and fine adjustments.
• Visual acuity sufficient to read measurements and inspect components to tight tolerances.
